Compliance Certificate Versus Defect Notice

In Queensland, the certificate is the gasfitter's formal sign-off that the gas system, as the job leaves it, complies with the rules that apply to it. The licensed gasfitter responsible for the work hands it to the owner straight after completion. An installation or an alteration is what triggers it, so not every gas job finishes with one.

The other document is a defect notice. Queensland gas work rules require a gas worker who finds a safety problem on a system being worked on to record it for the owner or operator. Fixing the problem on the spot removes the need for one.

Who Gets Which Copy of the Certificate

The owner receives the original, issued via the state government's online system as soon as the job wraps up. Homes on a gas distribution network add a second recipient: the operator of that network, sent a copy within 5 days.

The plate system changed in July 2025, and a metal plate is now rare. The certificate itself has become the record that matters.

Gas Safety Between Certificates

Between certificates, safety rests on three things: regular servicing, your own eye on the equipment, and quick reporting of anything that smells or sounds wrong. Government advice is to have a licensed gasfitter service appliances such as cookers and barbecues from time to time, following the maker's instructions.

Your part is visual only:

  • Look over pipework and appliances for rust, wear or fresh damage.
  • Store flammable items clear of every appliance.
  • Keep bottles tied down away from heat and ignition, with the valve closed whenever a bottle sits idle, empty ones included.

No owner should hunt for a leak. A gas smell indoors is urgent, so follow the steps on our gas leak repairs page and ring for help.

Renters carry extra protection. Under the tenancy Act, leaking gas and a failed supply both count as urgent repairs, and so does an appliance breakdown that leaves a rental without heating, hot water or a cooktop. The tenancy Act also requires the owner or manager to hand over a home in good repair and hold it that way for the whole tenancy.

Tenanted homes are a big share of this suburb. At the last census the count ran to 236 townhouses and semis alongside a large apartment stock, and plenty of those units sit in the blocks scattered between Oriel Park and the grounds of the Eagle Farm Racecourse. Local Ascot Plumbing certifies gas work in those rentals for owners and managers.

How to Find Your Gas Compliance Certificate

Start with the documents from the job and the gasfitter who did it, because that person issued the paperwork. Queensland also keeps every certificate in a searchable state register.

A fresh certificate follows every installation or alteration we finish, including new cooktops, covered on our gas cooktop installation guide. For the licensing side of gas work, see our gas fitting rules page.

Gas Compliance Certificate Questions

Call (07) 3523 6417

Does every gas job end with a compliance certificate?

No, only installations and alterations do. Repairs and servicing finish without one. A gasfitter who spots a safety problem during other work records it on a defect notice instead, unless the fault is fixed straight away.

Who can issue a gas compliance certificate in Queensland?

A licensed gasfitter alone. Queensland restricts gas work to licence holders, and gas work covers testing and certifying a system, its pipework and its connections. Always sight the gas work licence before anyone starts.

How do I find my gas compliance certificate in Ascot?

Look through the documents from the original job, then contact the licensed gas worker who did it, since that person issued the record. Queensland's state register is the other option, and it locates certificates by property.

How long does a gas compliance certificate last?

No expiry period applies. The certificate is a snapshot of the system at completion, and how long the gas system stays sound depends on the age of the pipework, appliance condition and regular servicing. Any follow-up work we do starts with a fixed quote.

Are gas leaks emergency repairs for Ascot renters?

Yes, they sit on the tenancy Act's emergency repair list. A failed gas supply and a broken appliance that leaves the home without heating, hot water or cooking count as well. The tenancy Act makes the owner or manager responsible for arranging them once the tenant reports the fault.
